Forever After 50x 70 cmOriginally the model nude was taken from an original black and white image, in an exploration into the use of colour with which to define depth and tone. I used to work like this with oil pastels. The composition and distortion of the main figure fit nicely into my own quest. There is only so far you can go with beauty for beauty sake. You can only go so far in the exploration of pose, as it becomes meaningless without context. What should the art being trying to express? Should it have meaning? | Portrait (mixed media) 40 x 30 cmThis painting veered into many ideas through different layers yet kept to the idea of a portrait. Initially a self portrait, then a journey into a material abstraction and back again and so on. Colour veered into an unreal abstraction but the mind continued to accept the definition of tone. The final lines in black tar were originally going to be a starting point to yet another layer. But in themselves were satisfying in portraying hints of iconoclastic imagery. | CABARETmixed media 30 x 81 cm -This painting was the first of 2013 and it could also be termed the last. It had been worked on and reworked. It is a mixture of acrylic, tar and lime, inspired from a model shoot .Trying to obtain life and movement in a body was my fascination, through the exaggeration of curvature in the pose.

THE CLOWNmixed media 46 x 46 cm - The strong earthy colours are framed by the tar lines into a possible glimpse of a portrait. If I wrote that on reflection, the result would point hilariously to the semblance of my mother! But again this is only my interpretation of an essentially abstract painting.
| NEANDERTHAL mixed media 50x 50 cm - Like the clown, I worked here the process of highlighting a figurative key to an abstract painting. The material quality works with the stance of seeing a humanoid like figure in transition, with the idea of civilization hinted at with the crossing of legs seen at the knee. The rock- like nature of the background, emphasises the primordial state of the humanoid’s starting point.
| DEFIANCEmixed media 50 x 60 cm - My inspiration is often the female nude. If I paint figuratively, it will be in the pose or material qualities that I hope to engage the viewer. In this painting it was very much the qualities of the look, hence the title. But also I was happy with the cartoonish style to it.
